# “Saved in a newer version of Premiere Pro”: fixes that work

The error is just a version gate. Here is how to get past it, from safest to most hacky.

The full message reads _“This project was saved in a newer version of Adobe Premiere Pro and cannot be opened in this version.”_ It appears whenever the project's version number exceeds what your install knows, even on a project that would otherwise load fine.

## Fix 1. Install the version that made it (safest)

In the Creative Cloud app open _All apps → Premiere Pro → ⋯ → Other versions_, and install the release that matches the project. Open it there, then export what you need. Adobe supports forward opening, not backward.

## Fix 2. Rewrite the project version (fast, this site)

Drop the file into the [downgrader](/premiere-pro-downgrader/), choose your release, and open the copy. For 2026 files this also restores the fields older builds need.

The downgrader panel sits right below this guide.

## Fix 3. Export XML / AAF from the newer version

Use _File → Export → Final Cut Pro XML_ (or AAF / EDL) in the newer version, then import it in the older one. You keep cuts, tracks, and basic transitions, but lose many effects, colour work, and Essential Graphics.

## Fix 4. Move to Productions

Productions (shared project folders) make it easier to keep each collaborator on a consistent release in the future, and lets you split big projects into smaller ones, which also helps downgrades stay under browser memory limits.

## Fix 5. Rebuild the edit

When a project crosses a structural change (community reports one around 2021 → 2020) and downgrades misbehave, you can import the converted file into an empty project, copy sequences across, and relink media.

## Checklist after opening a downgraded project

* Open the file in the older version, then **Import** it into a new empty project.
* Check each sequence for missing effects, titles and masks.
* Verify frame rate, sequence settings and audio channel mapping.
*   Try the most common routes: [2026 → 2025](/premiere-pro-downgrader/downgrade-premiere-pro-2026-to-2025), [2025 → 2024](/premiere-pro-downgrader/downgrade-premiere-pro-2025-to-2024), [2024 → 2023](/premiere-pro-downgrader/downgrade-premiere-pro-2024-to-2023).

Drop your .prproj here

or click to browse. Multiple files are fine.

Open it in

Always keep your original. Downgrading bypasses the version gate and repairs known format differences, but effects and features from newer releases cannot be interpreted by older builds. After opening, import the sequences into a fresh project.

## Frequently asked questions

What does a Premiere Pro downgrader actually do?

It unzips the .prproj (gzip-compressed XML), lowers the project version stored in the root Project element, repairs fields that newer releases omit, and gzips it again. Premiere then treats it as a project made by an older build.

Does downgrading a project remove my footage or edit?

No. A .prproj holds only references to your media plus the edit decisions. Your source clips are untouched. Features that only exist in newer releases may be ignored or dropped when the older version loads the file.

Which Premiere Pro versions are supported?

From Premiere 2026 (project version 45) down to CS6 (version 25), including 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017. You can pick the exact release you want to open the project in.

Keep the original project. Newer effects and features may be lost; check the converted timeline in the target Premiere Pro release.
