# Premiere downgrade methods compared

Seven approaches, what each one does to your file, and when to use which.

We compared how every common approach treats your project. The short version: editing the version number is enough until the source is a Premiere 2026 file, and then field repair becomes essential.

| Method | 2026 files | Privacy | Size limit | Effort |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Manual 7-Zip + Notepad | Only with extra steps | Local | None | Slow, easy to corrupt |
| Upload-based web converters | Varies | File is uploaded | 50 MB, or ~300 KB free tiers | One click |
| prem-down (CLI / right-click) | Yes | Local | Disk only | Install required |
| Asking an AI chat to edit it | Sometimes | Uploads your project | Context limits | Unpredictable |
| XML / AAF / EDL export | Yes (new cut list) | Local | None | Loses effects |
| Install the older version side-by-side | Not applicable | Local | None | Does not solve it if made in newer |
| This tool | Yes, with verification | Local, in browser | ≈ 512 MB of XML | One click |

## Manual 7-Zip edit

Duplicate the project, open it with 7-Zip, edit the extracted file in a text editor, change `Version` on the `Project` tag, then re-archive as _gzip_ (not zip) and rename to `.prproj`. Works for years of releases, but many people re-archive in the wrong format, and a 2026 project will still report as damaged.

## Upload-based converters

Services such as joshcluderay.com (50 MB cap) simply set the version to 1. Newer commercial ones advertise targets from 2026 down to CS6, often with free tiers for tiny files. You must trust them with your project, which can contain client names, file paths and unreleased footage names.

## prem-down

An open-source Go tool with Finder/Explorer right-click integration. It is the reference for the 2026 sparse-format repair and also walks entire Productions. This site reimplements the same rules (version map, field re-insertion, fixpoint verification) in the browser.

## AI chat edits

People have pasted projects into chat assistants to have the version changed. It can work but is non-deterministic, uploads the file to a third party, and cannot verify what it produced.

## XML / AAF / EDL

The only method officially supported by Adobe. It gives you a new project with the structure of the edit, not a true downgrade: effects, Lumetri settings, graphics and some audio routing are lost or need rebuilding.

## Which should I use?

* **Client delivery or critical edit:** install the original version and export, or use XML/AAF.
* **Colleague on an older release, plain edit:** this tool, then import into a fresh project.
* **Huge Productions:** prem-down on disk.

## Frequently asked questions

Which Premiere Pro versions are supported?

From Premiere 2026 (project version 45) down to CS6 (version 25), including 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017. You can pick the exact release you want to open the project in.

Is it really private?

Yes. There is no server. All processing runs in your browser tab and you can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.

Do Adobe Productions (.prodset) work?

Each .prproj inside a Production can be downgraded individually with the batch drop zone. Keep the folder layout intact and replace the files, then test the Production in the older version.

Keep the original project. Newer effects and features may be lost; check the converted timeline in the target Premiere Pro release.
